em4 works with organisations to improve financial sustainability

Effective fundraising and financial sustainability require an understanding of the internal and external factors that affect an organisation’s Mission, objectives and ultimately its success. Organisational development and capacity building are essential upfront investments to reaching that understanding.

em4 serves both Social Impact Organisations and Funders and Grantmakers who believe that reinforcing organisations is a smart investment and essential to achieving social impact.

With em4, NGOs, Associations, Foundations and Social Enterprises will build their skills and confidence in 10 essential capacity areas. This is ultimately the key to those organisations becoming better fundraisers and more mission-focused.

We believe that an SIO that delivers on its Mission helps its Funders deliver on theirs.

Our Vision is of a social impact sector where institutional Funders have lasting and powerful partnerships with their grantees, and where non-profit organisations are well-led and governed, mission-focused and financially sustainable.

We understand that Organisational Development (OD) is an essential investment for you as a Funder to increase your impact and drive your Mission. It is a requisite for effective fundraising and financial sustainability in the SIOs you support – your chosen partners in delivering the profound change you want your philanthropy to make.

Strong and resilient organisations perform with efficiency and effectiveness. Their human resources and operations are up to the task. They are strategic and plan for success. Their funding is diversified, and they need to be prepared for the unforeseen, as we have seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your grantee partners need learning and development support.

EM4 HAS A SPECIAL PAGE FOR FUNDERS AND GRANTMAKERS SEEKING TO SUPPORT THEIR GRANTEE PARTNERS IN BUILDING THEIR CAPACITIES AND COMPETENCIES. PLEASE USE THE SHORT FORM BELOW TO RECEIVE A PASSWORD FOR EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THIS PAGE.

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.

10 essential areas of capacity building for nonprofits

peer learning

Peer learning is essential to organisational development and better operations in SIOs. It involves SIOs, Funders and Grantmakers and the consultants who serve them. em4 facilitates different forms of peer learning via its securitised, online platform, CloudRooms.

SIOs have a lot to transmit to each other, and their leaders to learn from one another. At em4, learning and development is not a solo experience. We enable organisations to develop a network of peers who can support each other to drive improvements in their respective organisations, in a causal area or across a region.

All of our programmes are facilitated safely, carefully and with personalised support.

monitoring & evaluation

monitoring and evaluation

SIOs and Funders are seeking impact from their capacity-building investments. M&E is essential to demonstrate programmatic and financial returns that nonprofits have the right to expect from the high-performing em4 programme.

em4 has developed its own monitoring and evaluation method based on a Logic Model approach of “Input-Output-Outcomes-Impact”. The progress of each SIO is monitored regularly and recorded on em4’s electronic Dashboard. We add value to classical M&E by scaling it across regions and continents.

We act as a barometer for trends in problems and solutions. We want to ensure that SIOs and their Funders are getting the best value for their investment. At the same time, we are taking a comprehensive approach to improvement for the sector as a whole.

The meeting with em4 was based on a common understanding of NGOs and all that they can bring to Society. The desire to provide comprehensive support in all the dimensions essential to their operation in order to maximise their social impact.

em4 has provided me with an international collective intelligence approach, an effective blended learning approach and methodological tools for global support, adapted to each organisation and evolving. An exciting adventure that has only just begun!

Olivier Durand-Evrard (France)

em4 is a team of wonderful individuals who have a passion for contributing to social transformation and positive change. Their tools, ideas and approaches focus on supporting and assisting organisations to be the best they can be. Their practical ways of engaging with the NGOs ensures that their work goes beyond rhetoric but actual, tangible change.

Organisations that have an opportunity to engage and work with em4 can only benefit. I can recommend organisations to embrace the journey with em4.

I am delighted to be supporting the work of em4 in Argentina! The approach that em4 has developed is ideal in understanding the issues faced by our non-profits. Funders expect a level of transparency and good practice, and they also expect them to be financially sustainable. This requires a deep understanding of how an organisation functions before any fundraising happens. Working with other NGOs is always interesting in order to come to new ideas and finding different ways to solve problems. It has been so far an outstanding experience.

As organisations in the social impact sector seek to raise more funds, developing an income generation strategy needs to be based upon a strong organisational strategy. Unless an organisation is clear about what it wants to achieve (its impact) and what it needs to do to get there, achieving sustainable growth will not be possible. em4 has a unique approach to solving this issue through its 4-stage approach to organisational development and capacity building. Its blended learning programme provides the solutions, which then places an organisation in a stronger place to fundraise from.

I am excited to be part of the em4 team that is building the social impact sector in Kenya.

The em4 assessments and consultative solutions allow social impact organizations to have a 360-degree view of their organization functions. The em4 process is very methodical, draws deep insights on the entire operations and highlights areas that may need attention going forward.
Through the blended learning, organizations have an opportunity to strengthen their leadership, improve staff performance and maximize their social impact in a more sustainable and practical manner.
